A Rare Oil Portrait of a Reclining Nude Egyptian Woman by Muhammad Mukhtar Tawfiq al-Attar (Egypt, 1922–2006).
Oil on canvas, relined to museum standards. This exceptional portrait depicts a contemplative, reclining Egyptian woman in the nude, rendered with tender naturalism and soft tonal contrasts. Signed and dated lower right in Arabic by al-Attar, 1947
A unique surviving work by Muhammad Mukhtar Tawfiq al-Attar—an Egyptian painter who tragically ceased painting at a young age due to a debilitating eye disease (tubular vision), thereafter devoting his life to art criticism. Al-Attar is today regarded as one of Egypt’s most influential modern art critics, with only one known painting housed in the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art, and no others readily available in private hands. This piece is thus extraordinarily rare, offering insight into the early artistic promise of a man more widely celebrated for his theoretical contributions to Egyptian art.
