"Untitled" – JAMINI ROY (1887–1972).
A vibrant composition showing a stylised pastoral duet of Krishna in cobalt blue and Radha in warm ochre flanking a central, pattern-laden tree. Each figure plays a long transverse flute, their bodies swaying in mirror rhythm. At either side stands a proud peacock rendered in decorative bands of yellow, teal, and emerald, their curving necks echoing the lyrical line of the flutes. The background is a saturated terracotta red field punctuated with tiny floral rosettes and sprigs of foliage. Signed lower right.
Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and a leading figure in India’s cultural renaissance. Trained in European academic techniques, he famously abandoned them to embrace Bengali folk traditions, especially Kalighat pat and indigenous craft forms. His paintings are known for their simplicity, rhythmic lines, and vibrant flat colours. Roy received the Padma Bhushan in 1955 and his works are now held in major collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art. His contribution to Indian art lies in his ability to elevate folk visual culture to the status of fine art, redefining modernism through a distinctly Indian lens.
