At the centre, a single turquoise pillar divides a space filled with arched windows, abstracted shadows, and a dramatically angled staircase rendered in rich crimson and marbled tones. The bold use of colour and the dreamlike geometry create a mood that is both theatrical and introspective. The perspective is intentionally distorted, inviting viewers to navigate the uncertain spatial depth through emotion rather than realism.
Krishnaji Howlaji Ara was a trailblazing figure in modern Indian art and one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists’ Group in Bombay. Known for breaking away from colonial academic realism, Ara developed a distinctly expressive style, often using bright colours, loose brushwork, and simplified forms. While initially recognised for his female nudes and still lifes, Ara later embraced abstraction and urban scenes, reflecting the growing cultural dynamism of post-independence India. His works were exhibited widely both in India and internationally, including in prestigious events like the Venice Biennale and the Salon de Mai. Ara also played a significant role in art education, influencing future generations of Indian modernists through his involvement with the Artists’ Centre in Bombay.
