Jogen Chowdhury (b. 1939) is one of India’s most celebrated modern artists, known for his deeply expressive line work and figurative distortions that explore psychological and social themes. A graduate of the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Chowdhury’s work blends Indian folk sensibilities with European modernism. He is especially renowned for his mastery of ink, pastel, and dry brush techniques, and his use of crosshatching to create texture and emotion. Apart from his prolific career as a painter and draughtsman, Chowdhury served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha and has played a major role in shaping contemporary Indian art discourse.
