An Indian Jain Cosmological Textile Painting (Jambudvipa Mandala), Gujarat/Rajasthan, Late 18th–19th Century.
A rare and large hand-painted textile (pata) depicting Jain cosmology, executed on cotton cloth with natural pigments. At its centre is Mount Meru within concentric realms of oceans and continents, surrounded by celestial beings, deities, and symbolic motifs illustrating the Jain vision of the universe. The outer borders feature floral and geometric designs, with detailed inscriptions referring to Jain cosmological concepts.
Such works were traditionally commissioned by Jain patrons for ritual use in temples and households, serving as visual guides to the structure of the cosmos and the soul’s journey through realms of existence.
Approximately 83 x 83cm
Provenance: Formerly preserved in a Jain household shrine in Gujarat, later acquired by a European collector in the 1970s through the Mumbai art trade, and subsequently held in a British private collection for over four decades.
