An Indian Painting of the River God Varuna Riding the Makara, 19th-20th Century.

A finely executed Indian painting depicting the deity Varuna seated upon his mythical mount, the makara, shown here as a stylised aquatic creature with crocodilian features and a sweeping, scale-patterned tail. Varuna is portrayed adorned in vivid jewellery and a richly coloured crown, wearing green and saffron garments with delicate patterned borders. The makara is detailed with ornamental trappings and a patterned saddle cloth rendered in red and yellow tones, complementing the deity’s attire. The composition is set against a plain background within a double-ruled border highlighted by an orange outer frame.

Approximately 26 x 18.5cm

Provenance: Private collection from a distinguished W London lady
