"Untitled" – SADDEQUIN (1930–1987).
A framed calligraphy painting depicting the Kaaba, rendered in Sadequain’s distinctive bold calligraphic style. The Kaaba is shown centrally, its form seamlessly integrated with sweeping black Arabic script highlighted with a gold band along the upper edge. The surrounding background is composed in soft washes of blue and earthy green, allowing the calligraphy to dominate the composition. Additional flowing inscriptions occupy the lower register, with the artwork signed and dated 1405 AH (1985 AD) at the lower section. The painting is housed in an ornate frame featuring a carved floral outer border and a warm wooden inner surround.
Sadequain (1930–1987) was one of the most celebrated South Asian artists of the 20th century, widely revered for revitalising Islamic calligraphy through a modern expressive approach. Known for his powerful compositions, he transformed traditional scripts into dynamic visual forms, merging calligraphy with contemporary artistic sensibilities. His work spans murals, ink drawings, figurative studies, and monumental calligraphic pieces, many of which adorn public institutions across Pakistan and abroad. Sadequain’s calligraphy is characterised by bold strokes, rhythmic movement, and an unmistakable energy that made him a central figure in the modern Islamic art revival. His contribution remains foundational, and works attributed to him are held in high regard among collectors and institutions worldwide.
