A Japanese Namban Lacquer Tray with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, 17th Century.
A rectangular Japanese Namban export lacquer tray of shallow form, crafted in wood and richly decorated in reddish-brown lacquer with inlaid mother-of-pearl. The interior is finely adorned with a scrolling vine composition of stylised leaves and blossoming flowers, interspersed with circular gilt motifs, all set against a deep, lustrous black ground. The floral heads shimmer with iridescent shell inlay, creating a subtle interplay of light across the surface.
The raised everted rim is similarly embellished with scattered gilt roundels, framing the central design with balance and refinement. The exterior retains a dark lacquer finish consistent with Namban export wares produced for the European market during the late Momoyama to early Edo period.
