A Chinese Copper Gilt Rooster Incense Burner, 20th Century. –

A stylized zoomorphic vessel crafted from a dark metal, identified through web intelligence as a Chinese copper or bronze alloy, depicting a stout rooster or fowl. The item functions as an incense burner or censer and comprises two primary parts: a hollow, ovoid body with a flared, spout-like tail, and a separate, removable head section. The head features a prominent comb, wattle, and decorative cut-out details, consistent with the function of an incense burner. The surface exhibits remnants of original decoration, including faded red pigment and gold or gilt accents, which contribute to a rich, aged patina overlying the dark metal. On the flat base of the main body, a square four-character mark is visible, appearing to be East Asian script, likely an artist’s or workshop’s signature.

H: Approximately 13cm

Provenance: Private collection based in West London.
