A Safavid Copper-Alloy Shield with Figural Motives, 17th Century.
Of circular form, the shield decorated overall with dense inlay arranged in concentric registers. The central field features a mounted horseman in combat, surrounded by scrolling vegetal motifs and medallions filled with stylised floral designs. Four raised domed bosses, each pierced and chased with geometric latticework, are evenly spaced across the surface. The rim is bordered with a continuous band of Arabic calligraphy, enclosed by further engraved and inlaid floral ornament.
