An Islamic Red Carnelian Agate Intaglio Plaque with Lion and Calligraphic Borders.
An oval, lobed plaque carved from rich red carnelian agate, finely engraved with a central recumbent lion framed within a rectangular cartouche. The lion is depicted in profile with a detailed mane and radiating sun-like motif behind, surrounded by scrolling foliage and grape clusters. Encircling the central scene is a dense border of flowing Arabic calligraphy, interwoven with vegetal ornament, all delicately cut into the translucent stone.
