An Ottoman Imperial Fiscal Document Issued in Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem), Dated 1023 AH, Concerning Taxation of the Syriac Christian Community.
An important Ottoman administrative document issued in Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) and dated 1023 AH (1614–1615 CE), written in Arabic script in brown ink on paper. The document records the receipt of a sum of money owed by the Syriac Christian community residing in Al-Quds Al-Sharif, stipulated as tribute and annual taxation.
The text confirms that the amount was entered into the treasury ledger in Damascus (Bilad al-Sham / the Levant) and formally registered under the authority of Grand Vizier Hafez Ahmad Pasha, custodian of the lands of the Levant. The document further notes approval in the same year (1023 AH) by the representative of the Sultanate and the Caliphate in Holy Jerusalem, identified as Inayatullah bin Abi al-Muhallab.
