A very large and impressive Islamic chess king carved from translucent rock crystal, executed in the characteristic domed form associated with Fatimid examples. The piece rises in a rounded, helmet-like silhouette above a flat circular base, its surface richly carved in shallow relief with symmetrical scrolling foliate ornament.
The decoration is arranged in horizontal registers divided by narrow bands, with stylised palmettes, split-leaf motifs, and tightly coiled spirals radiating across the body. The upper section features mirrored vegetal forms emerging from a central axis, while the lower register displays bold scrolling tendrils framed within triangular and geometric compartments. The carving is crisp and rhythmic, creating a harmonious interplay of light and shadow through the translucent crystalline body.
