A Qajar Lacquer Papier-Mâché Pen Box Qalamdan with Figural Scenes, 19th Century. –
A Qajar lacquer papier-mâché pen box (qalamdan), an elongated, lidded case. The exterior is extensively decorated with figural scenes in the characteristic Persian miniature painting style of the Qajar period. The long sides depict various groups of figures, some engaged in banquet or musical gatherings, rendered with traditional attire and settings including draped curtains and flora. The top of the lid features smaller figural and decorative motifs. The base is painted with stylized tree designs on a dark ground. No discernible text or maker’s marks are visible.
