A Large Qajar Lacquered Papier-Mâché Pen Box Qalamdan with Miniature Battle Scenes, 19th Century –
A Qajar lacquered papier-mâché pen box, known as a *qalamdan*. This rectangular, lidded box features an exterior richly decorated with polychrome miniature paintings in a Persian style, depicting bustling hunting or battle scenes with numerous figures, many on horseback, set against a dark, possibly landscape, background. The interior is painted a light green. The inner lid and the interior bottom of the box are adorned with panels of gold Persian (Nasta’liq) calligraphy on a red ground. Visible translated text includes poetic verses explicitly identifying the object as a *qalamdan* and praising its subject.
