An Indian Miniature Painting Depicting Lord Shiva and Parvati with a Devotee, 19th Century.
A finely executed Indian miniature painting portraying Lord Shiva seated in a cross-legged posture, holding the goddess Parvati upon his lap. Shiva is rendered with pale ash-toned skin, adorned with necklaces and serpents coiled around his neck and arms, and bearing the crescent moon in his hair. In one hand he holds a trident (trishula), while a stream of water flows from his matted locks, symbolising the sacred Ganges.
Parvati is shown in red garments with delicate jewellery, seated gracefully against Shiva, her hand raised in a gentle gesture. At their feet rests Nandi, the sacred bull, depicted with a decorative saddle cloth. To the right stands a male devotee dressed in traditional attire, hands joined in reverence.
Approximately 18.7 x 14.8cm
