An Indian Sikh Painting Depicting Guru Nanak and the Redemption of Kauda Rakshash, 19th Century. –

This Indian miniature painting, executed in gouache on paper, depicts a religious narrative from a Janamsakhi, focusing on Guru Nanak. The central haloed figure is seated under a fruiting mango tree, accompanied by followers, including a musician playing a rabab, likely Bhai Mardana. The scene portrays the encounter with the cannibalistic Kauda Rakshash, depicted as two demonic figures in the foreground near a boiling cauldron. The composition includes additional groups of figures in a landscape under a sunset sky. The artwork is framed by a decorative black border with a white floral vine, set within a wide, plain pink paper margin. Gurmukhi inscriptions are present in the lower centre and on the cauldron.
