An Indo-Greek Silver Drachm of Eucratides I, Circa 171 BC.
A silver drachm struck under the reign of Eucratides I, the powerful Indo-Greek ruler of the 2nd century BC. The obverse presents a finely rendered portrait bust of the king facing right, wearing a crested Macedonian helmet adorned with a bull’s horn and ear motif, symbolising strength and royal authority. The facial features are strongly defined, with a prominent profile and detailed helmet ornamentation.
The reverse depicts the Dioscuri, the twin horsemen Castor and Pollux, riding side by side and holding spears, a dynamic and characteristic design associated with Eucratides’ coinage. Surrounding the scene is a Greek legend identifying the ruler as “BASILEOS MEGALOU EUKRATIDOU” (Of King Eucratides the Great). The lower section features additional monograms typical of Indo-Greek mint issues.
