A 19th-century portrait of a North Indian nobleman, likely depicting a Mughal ruler such as Akbar or Jahangir, executed in gouache and watercolour on buff-coloured paper with deckled edges. The subject is shown in a three-quarter profile, wearing an ornate red turban accented with golden stripes and a jewelled sarpech holding white feathers. He is dressed in a light blue jama patterned with small crosses and trimmed with orange and gold-toned borders at the neckline and cuffs. The figure wears a double-stringed pearl necklace with a central floral pendant featuring red and green detailing. His hand is positioned resting on the hilt of a staff or sword. The style reflects a transition between traditional Mughal miniature techniques and the naturalistic facial modelling influenced by the Company School.

Approximately 19 x 14cm

Condition report:

The paper exhibits overall toning consistent with age. There is minor foxing and some surface staining, most notably in the upper left quadrant. The irregular deckled edges show slight fraying and minor creasing. The pigments appear generally stable, though there is some light surface wear and minor loss to the finer white gouache highlights.
