Lot 354: A MODERNIST NEO-TANTRIC PAINTING OF SERPENTINE AND PHALLIC FORMS SIGNED GRANT.
This original work of the modern school is executed in watercolour and gouache on heavy-weight, aged paper. The composition is a Neo-Tantric study featuring central phallic and serpentine forms. The primary vertical element is rendered in shades of green and blue, suggestive of a Shiva Lingam. This is flanked by a serpent to the left with red eyes and a long, bifurcated red tongue, and an undulating green form to the right, representing Kundalini energy. The base of the work features two large circular forms in mottled blue and green, referencing the Yoni and the foundations of the central form. The piece follows the iconographic traditions of South Asian Tantric art, reimagined in a 20th-century modernist style. The work is signed in red paint in the lower right corner, with a signature appearing to read Grant.
Approximately 45 x 35cm
Condition report:
The paper shows general toning and areas of foxing, primarily near the margins. There is minor wear and slight creasing to the irregular, deckled edges of the sheet, which is consistent with age. The pigments remain vibrant and the paper support is stable.
