Lot 344: A WESTERN INDIAN FOLK STYLE BRONZE SHIVA DEVOTIONAL GROUP WITH NANDI AND NAGA, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY.
A provincial devotional group, likely from Western or Central India, intended for a domestic shrine. The composition features a central Shiva Lingam, the aniconic representation of the deity Shiva, set within a circular yoni base. To the side rests Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull, depicted in a recumbent posture facing the lingam. The bull is detailed with a prominent hump, a decorative saddlecloth, and a bell collar. A hooded Naga (cobra) rises from the rectangular plinth behind the lingam, its flared hood acting as a symbolic canopy.
H: Approximately 6.8cm
L: Approximately 9cm
Condition report:
The sculpture is in good condition, exhibiting a naturally aged yellowish patina with areas of darker oxidation and minor verdigris in the recessed areas. There is evident surface wear to the protruding elements, including Nandi’s head and the cobra’s hood, consistent with decades of ritual handling and cleaning. Traces of sacrificial powder and earth remain in the crevices.
