Lot 291: PAHARI SCHOOL, LATE 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY, 'A BLUE-SKINNED ASCETIC RECEIVING DEVOTEES'.
An Indian miniature painting executed in opaque watercolour and gold on paper, possibly representing an illustration from a Ramayana series. The central subject is a blue-skinned figure, likely a deity or an ascetic, seated in a meditative posture upon a dark animal skin. The figure is positioned in front of a white multi-storied architectural structure featuring arched doorways. He is attended by nine men wearing white robes and turbans; eight of the figures are kneeling in two symmetrical groups, while a ninth figure stands in a respectful bow. In the foreground sits a small wooden chowki (low table) laden with floral offerings beneath a golden canopy. The scene is set against a lush, hilly green landscape populated with stylised trees under a dark indigo sky. The composition is enclosed within a narrow yellow border and a wider dark blue outer margin.
Approximately 39.6 x 23.9cm
Condition report:
The paper support shows age-related wear, including general discolouration and light foxing throughout. There is a small loss of paper at the upper left corner. Minor pigment loss and surface abrasions are observable, particularly along the borders and within the architectural elements. The outer margins exhibit light wear and minor fraying.
