A Chinese gilt-bronze figure of a rhinoceros, produced in the style of the Han Dynasty. The figure is naturalistically modelled in a standing position on four sturdy legs. The rhinoceros is depicted with two horns, including a prominent curved primary horn and a smaller secondary horn, with rounded ears and a slightly open mouth. The thick hide is suggested by deep, heavy folds around the neck and shoulders. The body is well-proportioned and terminates in a short, curled tail. The figure is hollow-cast, with a large, roughly oval aperture to the underside.

L: Approximately 18.5cm

H: Approximately 11.3cm

Condition report:

The figure exhibits significant wear consistent with age. Much of the original gilding has been rubbed or lost, exposing the underlying bronze. There is extensive green oxidation and areas of reddish-brown corrosion across the surface, particularly concentrated around the feet, the horns, and within the folds of the neck and the underside. The surface shows some pitting and minor indentations.
