Lot 233: A PAIR OF CHINESE CARVED WHITE JADE LEAF AND SHOU CHARACTER ORNAMENTS.
A pair of Chinese white jade leaf-shaped ornaments, carved from translucent nephrite jade of a mutton-fat tone. The objects are worked on both sides with distinct decorative programmes. The obverse features a central leaf vein with fine, parallel incised hatching. The upper section is carved in relief and openwork with a fruiting sprig, likely a peach representing longevity, featuring a cross-hatched centre and scrolling foliate details. The reverse side is worked with openwork that forms a highly stylised version of the Chinese shou character, representing longevity. The items exhibit a smooth, greasy lustre and a fine polish. The combination of the leaf motif and the shou character are traditional auspicious symbols in Chinese decorative arts.
