Lot 232: A CHINESE BRONZE PAPERWEIGHT OF A COILED MYTHICAL BEAST.
This cast bronze scholar’s object or paperweight is formed as a mythical beast, possibly a xiezhi, qilin, or diting, depicted in a coiled recumbent posture. The creature features a single tapering horn on the head, bulging eyes, and an open mouth showing teeth. The body is detailed with rows of overlapping scales and a bushy tail that curls back towards the head. The casting has been finished with hand-tooling to define the texture of the scales and hair. The object possesses a deep reddish-brown patina, with wear on the raised areas revealing a lighter, golden-toned metal underneath. The underside is recessed and follows the general form of the creature.
L: Approximately 8cm
Condition report:
The item is in overall good condition. The patina shows natural wear consistent with age and handling, particularly on the horn and the high points of the scales. There are minor traces of verdigris and surface encrustation within the deeper recessed areas of the casting. No visible cracks or structural repairs are present.
