Lot 73: A CHINESE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE CARVING OF A RECUMBENT WATER BUFFALO.
A Chinese carved jade figure of a water buffalo, depicted in a recumbent posture. The piece is fashioned from nephrite jade of a pale celadon-grey colour with prominent russet inclusions and surface veining throughout the stone. The buffalo is carved with its legs tucked beneath its body and its head turned slightly to the right flank. The horns curve backwards and feature incised horizontal striations. The tail is flicked upwards and rests across the right hindquarter. The natural russet skin of the jade pebble has been incorporated into the design, particularly around the haunches and back.
L: Approximately 11.8cm
Condition report:
The carving is in good overall condition with natural internal fissures and surface veining inherent to the stone. There is minor surface wear and very small, scattered nicks to the extremities, including the hooves and horns, consistent with age and handling. No evidence of professional restoration was observed.
