Lot 59: A CHINESE RUSSET AND CELADON JADE CARVING OF A GOOSE AND GOSLING.
This Chinese hardstone carving, likely nephrite jade, utilizes the natural colour variations of the stone in a technique known as qiao diao (clever carving). The group depicts a goose with a curved neck alongside a smaller gosling, both resting on a base realistically carved as a lotus flower. The artisan has positioned the stone so that the pale celadon and opaque white areas form the bodies of the birds, while the darker russet and brownish-grey inclusions are used for the birds’ heads, wings, and the gosling’s body. The larger bird features finely incised wing plumage, and the gosling is decorated with a cross-hatched pattern. The underside of the base is carved to represent the radial veins of a lotus leaf and contains a single small drill hole at one end, suggesting it was intended as a toggle or for attachment to a stand.
L: Approximately 5.2cm
Condition report:
The piece is in good overall condition. There are no obvious chips, cracks, or repairs. Natural surface fissures and internal inclusions inherent to the stone material are present. Minor surface wear is consistent with an object of this age.
