Lot 58: ABDUR RAHMAN CHUGHTAI, SEATED SCHOLAR AND ATTENDANT, WATERCOLOR AND GOUACHE ON PAPER.
A watercolor and gouache on paper depicting a classical Indo-Persian scene. The composition features two figures: a seated male scholar and a standing female attendant. The scholar is dressed in a dark blue outer robe over a yellow tunic, seated cross-legged on a patterned rug beside a low wooden table. Upon the table rest two bound books and a small vessel. The female figure, standing to the right, wears a purple bodice and a light blue pleated skirt with a yellow border; she supports a tall-necked metal ewer (surahi) on her shoulder. The scene is set against a backdrop of a simplified architectural arch and slender, stylized cypress and flowering trees, executed in the revivalist style of the Lahore School.
Approximately 48.5 x 31.5cm
Condition report:
The paper is unframed and shows light brown toning across the entire sheet. Soft handling creases and minor undulations are visible throughout (photo 1). There is minor edge wear with small nicks and irregular edges. Several small specks of foxing and surface dirt are visible in the margins and background washes (photo 2). The red calligraphic ink on the verso shows minor bleeding or feathering into the paper fibers (photo 4). The pigments in the main illustration remain stable, though the background washes exhibit some mottled, uneven distribution.
