Lot 53: A RARE CHINESE CARVED TWO-TONE NEPHRITE JADE DRAGON BI-DISC ORNAMENT.
A Chinese substantial ornament, likely dating to the Qing Dynasty, carved from a single piece of nephrite jade. The work utilises the natural colouration of the stone to create a visual contrast between the pale celadon-white core and a deep russet-brown skin. One face is elaborately decorated in high relief and undercut with multiple chilong dragons with sinuous bodies and bifurcated tails weaving through a field of swirling clouds. The reverse face is worked in lower relief with an archaistic design featuring concentric bands of grain pattern and leiwen key-fret borders encircling the central aperture. The thick rounded edge is further embellished with intricate openwork, featuring a pierced honeycomb lattice and continuous dragon motifs that join the two faces.
L: Approximately 6.3cm
Condition report:
The item is in good overall condition. There are no significant chips, cracks, or visible repairs to the delicate high-relief carving. Natural inclusions and internal fissures inherent to the stone are present. Surfaces show age-appropriate wear and a soft, polished patina.
