Lot 31: AN EGYPTIAN REVIVAL CARVED BLUE STONE GAMING PIECE IN THE FORM OF A BOVINE HEAD, 19TH CENTURY.
A 19th-century Egyptian Revival carved blue stone gaming piece, modelled in the form of a stylised bovine head. The animal is depicted with an elongated muzzle, prominent almond-shaped eyes and curved horns, with deeply incised linear detailing defining the mane or neck. The rich blue stone displays natural lighter and brownish inclusions throughout, with areas of surface wear and old fissures. The form draws upon ancient Egyptian zoomorphic imagery and the tradition of animal-form gaming pieces. Ancient Egyptian gaming sets are known to have incorporated animal-headed pieces, including jackal-headed examples.
